Barents Bird festival in Murmansk

The cultural festival “Barents Bird” will make all of Murmansk fly on the 10th - 19th of April. In this period Murmansk will be the point where different cultures, artists and art forms from all of the Barents region and the Nordic Countries intersect.

The “Barents Bird” festival continues and expands the tradition of an annual international cultural event in Murmansk in the spring (previously the “Days of Norway” in Murmansk, then the Nordic Days in Murmansk). Rich programs are provided by the Norway, Finland and Sweden. Highlights include the Barents Choir, a collective performance by four different Norwegian, Finnish and Russian choirs, internationally renowned Norwegian opera, exhibitions dedicated a vast range of topics such as climate change, border culture and Tove Jansson’s Moomins, and a sami rap concert. Scene Finnmark provides a big part of the Norwegian program.

The audience is invited to take an active part, and the festival will broaden horizons and provide new understanding. There will be master classes in traditional arts and crafts, cooking, dance and music. Interactivity, dialogue and exchange is promoted through open discussions on important subjects. The same goes for the common projects between artists, such as the vast range of Norwegian-Russian double concerts in classical, traditional, hip hop and pop music. .

The aim of the festival is to develop the “art-environment” of the city and region by gathering a vast range of culture professionals representing different countries and art forms. Such a large-scale collective event will bring the cross-border cultural cooperation to a new level. Barents Bird will undoubtedly be a burst of wind beneath the wings of cultural life in the North.
